Croyd was feeling good. Like. Really Good. No, that didn't quite cut it. Like really really breakfast cereal orangutangs kind of good. Four was right out. Intergang had hit him with the MGH juice and Croyd was feeling...like...powerful. Powerful good. Good powerful good.
The kind of good that could do a lot of good good. He'd long felt like he was being the slacker for the team. He'd just been there for the eye candy and the cafeteria. And the teleporter...OMG...the teleporter was so cool, though he was fairly certain his privileges there were going to be revoked...
But he was lame a third to half of the time. Too often his powers failed to pay the rent. But this time around? He had struck gold and won the lottery. He had won the gold lottery. Was he mixing metaphors too much? Probably, but with this set of suer duper powers, who cared? Diminution, Plasma Bolts, Geoforce and Airwalking. He might as well wear an S on his chest.
But he had to stay awake...longer. Croyd was not naive enough that he really believed he could stay awake forever. Too many very smart people had told him otherwise, but he'd be damned if he couldn't make it last as long as possible, which is why the regular stuff wouldn't cut it. No, he needed some WAKEY juice, and his contacts told him there was only one place to get it.
And so the tiny Croyd wandered through the ventilation system of the Prison. Hammerhead, Shocker, Cold Hard Cash...Metallo, as he wandered by these guys in their solitary glow power drain system cells, he gulped and could easily see himself in there. What if Intergang captured him and turned him into some kind of super villain that hurt all the people around him? Croyd liked being..heroish. So he had to stop Intergang once and for all, and now he had the powers to do it.
Ah, here it was. Detention Block AA23. His concience phoned him one more time and he put it to voice mail. Croyd had to help people.
Through the ventilation shaft he went.
Captain Professor Voodoo Master. He had weird things in his hair and a whole lot of tattoos. Apparently they had to allow it for religious exemptions or something. Captain's bright brown eyes looked down at the tiny Croyd. "Well well well. You came. I didn't believe them but they spoke true."
"Wha? Who did?"
"Never you mind. You the Sleeper?"
"Born and Bred." Croyd kicked himself. That made no sense. Witty Reparte was the corner stone of all metahuman negotiations.
"You bring the stuff?"
"Yeah." Croyd went to full size. He noticed the security camera.
CPVM laughed, "Never you mind about that. So. You want a potion?"
"Yeah." Batting a thousand was Croyd. His conscience kept telemarketing him.
"To...do what?"
"Stay awake!" STUPID PHONE! He ripped it out of the wall. He'd told it to stop but the other voices thought it was a good idea to leave it. What if he needed to dial 9/11 in a phone storm or something?
"Well...I can do that." Croyd had been around the block. He was kinda distracted and all being on the super MGH juice and kinda crazy but he was in control. Still, none of the casters he'd been around used musical numbers asking him the same question over and over, and stuff with floaty masks and creepy base music. Or was that his sound track power outta whack? He wanted something better so he kicked in the Hotel California which seemed more appropriate.
"I asked are you ready?"
"Wha?" Croyd snapped out of his reverie.
"You want this potion or not? I gotta bust outta here...."
"Oh. Sure."
"Now you know that the price is-"
Glurk. Glurk. Gurgle gurgle Glurk. "Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp. Wazzat?"
For a moment Captain Professor Voodoo Master smiled. "Nothing. Never you mind Croyd Crenson. Never you mind."
"Groovy." Croyd shrunk down again and airwalked out...
Entirely unaware of the tiny little viral particles he was leaving behind him...everywhere he went.

Lower Metropolis - Tribeca
The Triangle Below Canal Street is famous for its film festival and its unique housing. Most of the vacant industrial buildings were refitted into housing in the 1960s and become some of the quickest selling properties. New York Law School is also found here.
It's been the worst week of the citywalker's life. Even Tokyo wasn't like this. Tokyo - he was an overconfident teenager with the secure knowledge that this was his purpose, the thing he was literally made to do. Failure didn't enter onto his radar. This time? Failure is a disaster and even success... But they can't wait any longer. The demon's latest pranks range from the harmless - removing the Statue of Liberty's robe - to a very nasty trick in a night club that caused multiple injuries and one death. And Jack can feel it reaching its tendrils out into every corner of the city. He can hear New York screaming.
This stops NOW. The people he's called are the right ones for his plan. Loki offered to make something to put the demon in. The Hulk's strength should help reduce collateral damage, and he trusts Banner to keep control. The young woman, Cir-El, is an unknown to him, but her heart and spirit say something. Moon Knight might be insane, but he knows demons. And Kilroy...what can he say about Kilroy? He isn't sure he wants to. He stands in an empty parking lot, outside a boarded up warehouse. "Okay. I'm going to do something that will...I know...get its attention." He turns to Loki. "You have the package, I hope." If not, then Kilroy will have to make a literal scapegoat after all.
To Bruce. "Keep control, try to reduce damage, and if you have to, scare away any idiots that think they can watch a superfight." Then he closes his eyes for a moment. "And promise me that whatever happens you won't hurt anyone here." An odd promise to ask, but necessary in this moment.
He looks at Cir-El. "Same thing. Damage. Civilians. I know you aren't equipped to directly take on the demon, but it's going to start trying to destroy buildings. Try to make sure nobody gets killed."
Finally, he turns to Kilroy. "Are you prepped?" It's an odd way to put it. But he shifts back his jacket momentarily when only the "Economy" can see. He's prepped. He doesn't want to be, but he is.
"I'm not Captain America or any great tactician...but let's get this done." One way or another: It ends tonight.
Using human metaphors is probably not the best idea around Loki, since he doesn't understand most of them. "Package? I don't have a package...was I supposed to bring something else?" The young god looks worried now, concerned that he's already messed up.
Cir-El has jumped and run from the Hall of Justice, it was not very far and with her speed it had taken only moments when she heard Jack's call. She might lack super vision, but Super Hearing will do on most days. She nods at the orders and says, "Got it...I'm probably best off using speed to rescue civilians directly."
Kilroy nods, "I've been...checking the family vaults. There are some interesting artifacts there that will serve your purpose." He has 17 different plans, and he is terrified none of them will work. He is already not the most popular person in the world and unsure about this, but Kilroy will do what he must. That is who he is. He's all prepared to dunk anything around them in massive amounts of Holy Water.
Banner listens as Jack gives directions on what he wants and expects from everyone. "He is asking if you have what you promised to contain the demon within." is told to Loki before stepping away from everyone. Closing his eyes a moment goes by as his body transforms into that of the Hulk his clothes ripping off leaving him in dingy ragged pants. He gives Jack a thumbs up to show for now he does have control of himself. Looking around over the others his green eyes narrow slightly as he concentrates waiting patiently as a Hulking monster can at least.
Jack nods. "Okay. Let's do this. And yes, that's what I meant. If not, Kilroy can do something." It's not a disaster if the kid didn't get it done on time. "And remember...we need to *contain* this and keep the damage down." He crouches and then turns, running to the abandoned warehouse and scurrying onto the roof. There are people on the road. The hospital is...a bit to the north, but far enough away. He hopes. He can hope for this not to go pearshaped from the start. Then he crouches on the roof, puts both hands on it, and...starts to fix all of the damage caused by the years of neglect on this place. Energy flowing outwards from him. Positive. Healing. The demon should hate it. If not, well, he'll have to do something even more spectacular. Plus, Kilroy has all sorts of things up his sleeve.
There's a feeling of tension...of something waiting in the air. Building energy that starts to settle on those present, a little. It's a faint hint of fear, nothing that would bother any of them, but it's definitely there.
And then? Every light in the parking lot explodes, sending shatters of glass outwards. Two cars driving past find themselves on tarmac so slick they can't steer or stop. It's started.
"Oh...well yes, of course." Loki says, making motions in front of himself to conjure the object. It appears in the form of a large pot which he has to catch out of the air and waddles over to Jack to set on the ground. "I couldn't make it smaller. But you can use it as a decorative planter. Or send it into the sun."
Then the lights explode and cars are going crazy. He might not be able to stop both of them, but he can brace himself and place himself in the path of one of them in order to stop it.
Cir El had been wondering at the directions given to the slender bookish older man, it sounded as if he was expected to be doing something highly damaging, or preventing the same, and she was curious how. She saw him close his eyes and heard his hear beating louder and faster, then his skin started turning green of all things and his body became at least five times as massive, possibly closer to ten. Well, that explains it. She does not know the Green Goliath, but he looks like he as if he has muscles to spare.
Suddenly the lights explode and cars nearby start skidding as if on Black Ice. Cir-El reacts immediately, headed to the car that looks in more immediate danger of crashing. She jumps the distance, intentionally NOT cushioning her landing so her feet sink in on arrival. She braces herself and lets the car hit her hands. She is driven back, but the car comes to a halt and she is essentially undamaged.
Kilroy causes 50 tons of Holy Water to begin raining in a ring around the area, slowly tightening, enough to allow the demon to appear, but enough to cause it pain anywhere else but the chosen battle ground in the immediate vicinity. He keeps a wary eye out.
A side door to the warehouse opens just in time for Gabriel to walk into the sudden downpour of holy water. "Jeezus... Where's this come from!?" Taking the backpack off his back and putting it over his head he jogs forward, into the ring formed by the 'rain' and spotting Kilroy first, he makes his way over to him, "What's going on? Terrorist attack? Alien invasion? Punks with BB guns?" As he speaks he's motioning to the broken parking lot light to show what he's asking about.
The cars are stopped, but the parking lot is now dark, making the Hulk a shadow against a shadow that might not be immediately seen. And now the warehouse is starting to crack and crumble.
"Let it fall! It's empty!" calls a voice from above "And somebody tell that kid to either get the hell out of here or help!" He doesn't know who the kid is, but he's glad he's not going to have to get Cir-El to pull him out. The roof is starting to break under him, but Jack doesn't seem particularly bothered. Why let it fall, though?
Because the demon...well, there's holy water containing it for a moment. For a moment. Unfortunately, it appears to have worked out another of Jack's tricks, that of going from point A to point C without going through point B. Another warehouse starts to shatter, and there are lights on inside this one. Time for Hulk to catch a building?
Jack leaps from the crumbling building, landing facing that direction. "Oh no you don't. Come to daaaadddy." Is he actually beckoning? Yup.
"Banner, hold the building up while Ii get the people out," Cir-El states.
Soaked, Loki's hair long hair sticks to him and he ushers the driver of the car away. "Why did you make it rain? Now we are all wet!" The Asgardian sulks as he comes back to the vessel he brought.
Cir-El runs forward faster than the eye can follow, opening doors and searching the building at super speed. Carrying one person at a time, so she can cover them with her cape and keep friction from damaging them...
Kilroy shrugs to Loki, "I tried to keep it off of us. It is holy water and stings the demon but its already learning more of Jack's abilities. This is bad. VERY bad, we're running out of time." He'll move the rain to wherever he can to harass the thing unless he thinks it will disrupt Jack's plan.
And then comes as one warehouse drops and then another starts to go. Hulk is quick into action running over using himself as a brace to keep it up so they can get the innocents out of it. The look on his face is fixed as he stands much like a statue his arms out to keep it up.
OK, busy people... Since Kilroy seems too busy to answer his question Gabriel goes and stands behind him, leaning over to look over his shoulder and try and follow his line of sight to see if he can spot what everyone is so busy with. While he's doing this his hands are busy searching through the side pocket of his backpack and after a few seconds of rummaging he pulls out what looks like a small, overstuffed photo album. Since he's so close to Kilroy he keeps his voice low when he asks, "So. Terrorists it is then?"
While Hulk is holding up the second warehouse with his exceptional might and Cir-El is whisking out the people as fast as she can, another figure in silver-white turns up, carrying a pair of people from an upper level down to the street with his grapple. "Looks like your party's already starting, Hawksmoor!" Moon Knight calls, urging the two to get clear. "What's the situation?" he can see in the darkened area, at least, so for now he's scanning for anyone else who seems like they're out of place.
"Bastard's worked out how to dodge holy water rain." He glances at the kid. "No, it's a demon. Like I said, either help protect civilians, or get your butt out so we have one fewer people to protect." Kid doesn't quite look like a mundane to him, or he'd have Cir-El dump him somewhere.
Okay...another building starts to shake, but Jack backs up towards the pot. "Loki, make that pot look like something more...attractive, would you?" The kid's good at glamor. Whether it will fool the demon is another matter. "Like, say, me." Yup. He's using himself as bait at this point. The new building in danger is a condemned tenement, but yeah, there are people in there. Squatters and the like. There's no EMPTY part of New York.
Loki nods, and holds his hands over the pot, a faint green glow swirling around it as it grows and reforms into the form of Jack, including movement such as breathing, blinking and shuffling his feet.
Kilroy begins working on stone armor for himself in case he has to fight some manifestation of the demon instead of the hulk but it takes time to create and destroy the numerous interlocking Rai stones. In the meanwhile, a few hover out the second and third story of the warehouse in case any of the folks inside come to the windows to lower them down. He'll resume the holy water in a NEW form besides rain soon enough.
He looks at Gabriel. "A demon has possessed the city. Jack Hawksmoor's life is at stake. We're trying to save him and keep it from destroying the city"
Cir-El is powerful, but she has her limits. For example, unlike Superboy, she can not extend her defenses over others. The costume Brainiac gave her is really tough though, so she can use it to protect someone. Of course, she has to cut back her acceleration, so she does not break bones saving people. It is not easy.
Gabriel's eyes flit from one superpowered person to another and the wheels turning around in his head are alnost a visible thing. Once Jack asks for bait Gabriel starts to grin and nod to himself, "Demon... Not much in here that'll help for that. But if its bait that's necessary I can do that..." Stuffing his photo album back in the backpack he drops the pack by Kilroy and says, "Watch that for me, will ya?" before running towards Jack, "Hey, hey you. The one being chased around by the invisible demon! Come over here and shake my hand real quick! Trust me, it'll help!"
Moon Knight curses, turning to the tenement building just slightly before it starts shaking; since Jack pointed out the presence infesting the city, he's spent the last couple days honing his awareness of it..for what little good it does right now. It looks like Kilroy and Cir-El are managing it for now, so he pauses by Jack and Loki to say earnestly, "Loki, can you feel that in Jack? If you can, can you make the pot give off that energy too? If I can sense it, the demon probably can. It might help nudge it to possess the right Jack." he notes, and then he's off with the others helping try and keep the nearby city from killing the people still in the area. Pity they couldn't have cleared bystanders out first, but it's clear too that time is simply out.
One Jack over there, one next to Loki. Will the glamor fool an invisible demon. It...actually looks like it might. The ground buckles in a rising tide towards Loki and the pot, enough to knock the godling off his feet if he's not careful. Unfortunately? It's multitasking. And it's multitasking badly. Street lamps explode, radiating out from the area. More to the north.
Jack? He doesn't know what the kid can do, or he wouldn't do this. Not under the circumstances. He moves to shake the kid's hand, but as he does, "It's up to something. There's..." Narrowed eyes. "A desecrated church, it's after that. And it's...we need to concentrate...more of its attention."
The church? It has gargoyles. They come to life and start flying towards the group. Primarily Hulk and Cir-El. And the civilians. This just got seriously weird. No, wait. This just got seriously weirder.
A second group of gargoyles flies...right towards the hospital, where they start trying to get into windows. Somebody should probably go deal with that.
Loki watches as others are busy being heroic and takes off toward the hospital, throwing magic at the gargoyles, but there are too many of them, so he tries to shield the entire hospital with magic.
Super Hearing is good, she can ignore any room that has no heart beats in it. She may be slower at this than, say, the Flash or Superboy, but not many others. She has the warehouse done when she hears...what exactly? It sounds like stone scraping stone, but it is coming through the air. She looks up and sees the Gargoyles. She sees the ones flying towards her rescued civilians first, but spots the second group quickly. She says, "Banner, defend the civilians here, I have to stop that group before it reaches the hospital!"
With that, she runs towards the second group, jumping up to smash the lead Gargoyle to gravel in mid air. She hopes someone finishes pulling the civilians out of the other buildings, she will have her hands full for a while...
Kilroy is still almost done but not quite finished constructing the armor, but he can begin smashing several of the gargoyles with Rai stones, while Veolus manages the remaining stones for those still fleeing the buildings. Meanwhile he moves towards the church. The plan requires Kilroy to be in the right location at the right time.
As Gabriel takes Jack's hand nothing happens. And instead of watching Jack, Gabriel's eyes are on the buckling ground while he mutters, "A little long, a liiiiiiittle longer. Don't let go yet..." Right at that point where most people would forcefully pull their hand away Gabriel melts into a blob of golden ectoplasm which reforms almost instantaneously into an exact copy of Jack, which takes off running away from the buckling ground and back toward the empty parking lot, "Hah! Bet you can't catch me, ya ugly bugger!" to Jack #1 he yells, "You could've at least told me you can't see the blasted thing!"
Once all he innocents are out Hulk tosses the warehouse away like its nothing at all. Being directed to protect those here he moves into action planting his fist into gargoyles as they come close and catching one he spins around throwing it towards others that are incoming like a disc or javelin. As one human is about to get hit he uses his own body as a shield being hit by a gargoyle in the back.
Moon Knight keeps on track to the tenement building. The heavy hitters are defending the hospital, but the second building that suffered the demon's attentions might still have a few people in it. He makes his way in, shouting for anyone that might need help getting out and making a fairly quick scan of the reachable areas.. but even as he does, he's being mindful of what he can sense. The way jack was talking he has a feeling something is going to be going down soon at that church.
"I can't be mimicked and...it's too *dangerous* kid!" Jack exclaims. Then he senses what's going to happen next, feeling waves of energy towards the hospital. The dang hospital. He should have put this further away. "Hulk. Catch the dang *hospital*!" he yells to the green guy. Meanwhile...there are three Jacks now. The one that's really a clay pot, the real thing, and the one that's a very brave shapeshifter. A sense of maniacal laughter surrounds the scene.
Dang kid. It's going pearshaped. It shouldn't have been able to reach the hospital yet. Loki went to protect civilians, so the glamor around the pot, while quite realistic, isn't moving around like the other two Jacks are. There's a rush of energy towards it, curiosity, but then...then...it draws back. There's nothing, yet, to give it a reason to jump into it...and there's also one thing. Loki forgot.
The clay pot isn't afraid. Fear. This thing feeds on fear. This thing thrives on it, thrives on the screams of scared civilians, on Loki's concerns about screwing up, on Cir-El's fear, barely held in check. On Gabriel's. The only being NOT drawing it is the anger-bound form of the Hulk. It likes the hospital. That's fear, there's already fear there, and it can make more, and it's starting to realize, to realize what it can do.
But there's also that pesky citywalker. The pesky trebled citywalker. And it launches itself towards the one that appears to it to be feeling the most fear. Which, unfortunately, isn't Jack. It's Gabriel - and the demon hasn't noticed yet that this version of Jack lacks the deep connection with the city. Or maybe it doesn't care. As Gabriel runs, the ground under him buckles...something which wouldn't stop Jack, but? Jack can't be mimicked. Not by any means other than magic, anyway.
The dang kid...
Loki senses that he's totally screwed up and shapeshifts into the form of Jack to try and help at the hospital, but he doesn't know what to do. The young god begins to panic, covering his mouth with one hand to try and not make his little sounds of nervousness audible.
Cir-El thinks of a trick, if she is fast enough it might work. She jumps at the first Gargoyle...and then KICKS off it, launching herself at the second...then repeating to smash a third. It seems to be working until she misses the fourth and goes flying off, unable to change direction until she lands...
Kilroy finishes his stone armor and is much MUCH stronger as a result. A small penny is placed on each of the other jacks to track where each are at all times when in sight, but he flies on top of the church, now bereft of Gargoyles, a storm cloud of Rai Stones swirling around and smashing anything that gets near him or Jack as he approaches. Kilroy is now prepared and he is angry. He is livid because of what he considers the most likely necessary outcome. But he waits.
The Hulk runs over as directed to the hospital now trying to brace it up. This won't be easy it being bigger than the warehouse of course. Gritting his teeth his hands press against the building but the anger is building up more in his eyes as he lets out a loud echoing growl.
And Gabriel's pulse is indeed racing. And it jumps another notch as the buckling ground heads for him. He might not be a citywalker and his mimicking of Jack Hawksmoor might have not had the exact results he planned for but Gabriel-Jack is also no longer as new at this game as he used to be. His reflexes are a bit off since Jack's body doesn't have the same capabilities as his own but they are good enough for the shifter to be able to jump off to the side and away from the buckling earth, tucking into a roll then popping up and running away at an angle to the first attack but still running away from the hospital and other populated buildings.
The demon might be detecting fear but its clearly not interfering with Gabriel's thought process as he yells out, "Come on, Ugly! At least I bet you're probably ugly. Follow me, you know you want to follow me to... Where does he want to follow me to?" The last is yelled as loud as possible so if there is a plan someone can fill him in.
Moon Knight exits the tenement building on the far side, with anyone he found still inside in tow. He's unable to see that the hospital is actually not doing so well. But he can sense Kilroy clearly at the church, and, he thinks possibly, that irregular flicker that seems to be Jack might be heading that way too. Well, if a big nasty demon had something up it's sleeve, a hospital would be about the best distraction to use right before you did it... he heads to the church, trusting the god, the Kryptonian and the hulk to keep the hospital safe.
"Ideally, into the other fake me." But that ship's probably sailed. Jack narrows his eyes, takes a deep breath. "Try to lead it that way. If it doesn't follow, change into something else and RUN."
It's the kid's fault at some levels. But it's not. The demon isn't trying to jump into Gabriel. It's trying to kill him. That tells Jack the last thing he needs to know. He pauses.
"Even if it does...still run. Thanks. You tried."
Then, he breaks into a run himself, towards the church, leaps at a wall and sinks into it, emerging into the cold, dark that was the sanctuary. It's been desecrated by some amateur Satanists, at some point. The crucifix hangs upside down and there's blood - hopefully not human - splattered over the altar and filling the chalice. Kilroy and Moon Knight will both sense him in there. "Come on...come and get me." And he opens his link to the city all the way, reaches out to her. Embraces her. A quiet moment in the middle of the storm. Physically, crouched there in front of the twisted altar.
And as he does so, the demon changes tactics one last time, the church tinted with blood, the buildings still standing starting to turn into twisted images of themselves and that, like a plague, extending outwards across Tribeca. Threatening the entire city. It has it now...it has the power, but it's not looking behind it.
Not looking as Jack breaks off that embrace, the one nobody can see, tears of metal blood starting in his eyes. Not looking as he...opens the conduit to the fullest extent, grabs and pulls. He can't let it do this. He can't let it do this to his city. He can't let it do this to his friends and their homes, and every person who moves through the City That Never Sleeps.
And he also can't let it kill a teenaged boy who just stopped to offer his help, who just tried with everything that kid had, who just risked himself. "I'm sorry," he whispers.
Then, a moment later, he screams.
It only takes a few seconds to hit the ground, Cir-El can not leap like some others can, only at most half a mile across and possibly a quarter of a mile upwards. She starts running back to the Hospital when she sees things start to turn seriously WRONG. Jack had warned her about this possibility, he had said it means that he is failing...something confirmed moments later when she hears Jack Scream. She is torn...confused...but then firms up...there is only one person here who can help, and that is Loki. This is a matter of magic, and he is the only Magician here. She heads back to Loki, stopping in front of him and saying, "We need a solution and we need it now, what magic can draw and trap the demon now that it is manifesting?"
Kilroy has two objects that appear in his hands, two objects collected through his experience. The first is a fail safe made by his father, designed to be used against Kilroy, paid for by some of the deadliest for hire mages on the planet, used by the elite criminal organizations of the world. It is a thing seethed in Darkness, and Kilroy was tempted to destroy it on sight, but thought he might need it one day.

This is that day. He still feels there are other options. Indeed, it is only now, when it is far too late does it occur to him that maybe he can find a way to ask himself the price of something. But other methods or no...there is no TIME. The alternative plans have failed. So atop the blasphemous swollen church, surrounded by stumps of where the gargoyles once stood, now smashed on the ground below, Kilroy looks down through the stain glassed ceiling, not to crash through it to the rescue, but to point the gnarled brass scepter with a skull on the end, focus his will and intention on Jack and simply says,"Die."
It is invisible, but it is a hammerblow to Jack's body, instantly shutting down his life essence, snuffing his life like a candle.
But Kilroy himself had a failsafe from the failsafe. When he was in Purgatory, corruption in the corruption of Providence allowed him to obtain some...items....among the which was a simple bottle full of the River Elysium, the very shore that flowed through heaven itself, pouring it on Jack as the Demon and He merged, the holiest of holy water feel down down down through the chaos his spell erupted below, awashing Jack and Demon alike. To a human or a mortal spirit, it would be benign...but to a Demon, it would be like acid. Not enough to kill but to make the passage back to its native domain painful beyond imagining.
This was personal to Kilroy.
With a final whispered act, he places the Ferryman's coins on Jack's eyes as he falls. That Jack may find his way.
Gabriel starts looking around himself, particularly at the sky, as he continues to run. After a few seconds and a stumble he spots what he's looking for, a flock of pigeons that have been startled into the sky by the sudden changes in the buildings around them. His focus on the birds he misses seeing a car parked at the edge of the street and runs straight into it but manages to keep eye contact on the birds as he turns the hit into a slide that takes him to the other side of the vehicle. Then, instead of Gabriel-Jack popping up running from behind the vehicle, a pigeon, grey with white and black markings along the wings' edges, flies up into the sky headed towards the church circling around it and watching the action taking place inside it through the hole made in the ceiling's windows by Kilroy. Finally it lands next to Kilroy himself, melts into a golden blob again and once he's reformed asks,"Is it over now?"
Moon Knight grapples up to the roof quickly, intending to coordinate with Kilroy when he feels Jack appear in the church below.. and then scream as things go horribly awry all around them. Moon Knight gasps, his glowing eyes snapping to Kilroy. "He's damn well luring the demon to him anyways!" he snaps, We've got to get-- what are you -doing-?!" he exclaims in disbelief when Kilroy activates the staff. Moon Knight rushes over to yank Kilroy by the shoulder.. but he can already see through the now dripping skylight that it's too late.
Hearing his friend screaming causes Hulk to take nearby light poles to brace the hospital with at least long enough for them to do whatever they need too. Now he is running towards the church tossing anything out of the way that he needs too. "JACK! HULK COMES!" leaping he attempts going through the glass.
Pulled into him. It's agony for that moment...but at least it's his agony, not hers. And fear. This was the last resort, but it wasn't even looking at the pot, it wasn't remotely fooled. And in the end? He didn't lure it. He forced it. He found the way to eject it...and had it been a different demon, an exorcism would have solved the problem, Jack as the focus.
It wasn't a different demon. He looks up, sensing Kilroy's presence. And Moon Knight's. He should have given Moon Knight the gun. But then, could he really have trusted him to use it? That's the only motion he can do, everything else, everything about him, every bit of him is focused on keeping the demon from getting away. From jumping back into the city and if it does that, all is lost. He's terrified, but he made his choice. No other way. No, wait, there's one other thing he can do. Stop screaming.
Stop screaming in the moment before Kilroy whispers one word, and perhaps he hears it, perhaps not, but it's just...a moment of deep, profound cold as his body crumples to the ground like a puppet with cut strings. And in the next moment he almost, almost understands something...but there's another problem, the one he didn't foresee, the one none of them saw coming. He's still holding the demon. And, betrayed, snarling, the demon holds onto him. Nobody can see their moment of struggle, although those sensitive to magic might sense the edges of it. Kilroy's trick might almost have got him free...but he's still holding on, he *can't let it get away* even as he understands what that cold was. He can't risk it...and the two, tangled together, the demon the one screaming now, a scream that almost impinges on the senses of those NOT sensitive to magic and the astral, and is definitely heard by those who are, FALL.
And fall...and fall into hell...
And the city snaps back to normal, the buildings returning to their old form, but the damage remains...the collapsed warehouses and tenements, the damage to the hospital - propped up by Bruce but still in need of fixing...the crumpled parking lot.
Everything is very, very quiet and still, including the citywalker's body, supine in the desecrated sanctuary. Everything is very quiet indeed.
Cir-El sees the city suddenly revert to normal, and realizes she can no long hear Jack. She breaks down crying, realizing that, somehow, the demon has been stopped, but it cost a brave man his life.
Loki has no idea what to do with himself. When the danger begins to use his magic to make repairs to the building, feeling rather awful. Once he is finished with the hospital he would move on to other damaged buildings.
Kilroy shakes his head. He'd cry but his experience under the Dark Curse of Mnemosyne and his horrific experience in Wonderland...changed him. "No Gabriel. Jack's soul has been sent to hell by the demon that wouldn't let him go. We're not done. We're going to find the right portal. We're going to rip it open, and make every single one of those infernal things regret every evil act they have ever conformed on the mortal plane of existence. We are going to Find Jack." He looks as the brass rod turns to complete dust and blows away in a mystical wind. "And then we are going to bring him home." He looks at Moonknight as he says the last, in answer to the question the second asked him.
Moon Knight's shoulders fall a bit as the city returns to normal. "..He sacrificed himself to save the city." he says solemnly.. but then twitches, jerking back back from Kilroy, and pressing a hand to his head. Whatever's going on, at least he's quiet while Kilroy explains to Gabriel... and by the time Kilroy is done talking, Moon Knight answers with a far more fervent tone than the one he'd been using before, "You're damn well right we are."
The Hulk stands by the body of Jack poking it once or twice with a finger. Things around him go rather into a blur and no sound can penetrate his ears. Finally he lets out a roar of rage punching the floor of the church and then picking up different objects they are tossed through windows broken or not. The roar becomes that of agony as he scoops up the body into his arms in a hugging gesture his eyes closing as he snugs him just lightly. Setting him down gently he inhales deeply letting out another roar now turning there is blind rage and he leaps out the window he came through. Both hands come down to crack the ground beneath him and he latches onto a light pole uprooting it from the ground and tossed like a javelin through the air hitting an abandoned building and now he lifts a car up over his head.
Cir-El, through her tears, hears what Kilroy is saying. She Runs to the church, but pauses. She steps in front of the Hulk, "I know how you feel, but not that way. Do not destroy what he died to save, let us speak to Kilroy about how we get him back.
Gabriel sighs at Kilroy's answer and looks glumly down at Jack's body for a long moment. Then he looks back at Kilroy and Moon Knight to say, "You know, I've never been to another dimension, let alone to Hell. Does anyone know if demons even have DNA?"
Then The Hulk starts going berserk drawing the shifter's attention, "*sigh* It looks like we have a more immediate problem right now. If he doesn't calm down he could be as bad as the demon itself. Anyone got any idea? I mean, I can go toe to toe with him if I can copy him but I don't think that's the best option for keeping damage to the city down..."
Kilroy says, “He did. And we will." He looks at the Hulk. He can't blame Bruce for being upset, but the body might be needed. He doesn't think the Hulk is a mindless monster like many but he sees how the Hulk gently puts Jack down and is ..oddly touched. And really? Upgrade or no, he's not REALLY doing much to the Hulk if the hulk doesn't wanna be affected. "Let him work his anger out. Keep an eye out in case he hurts anyone. I think its better than you think. I don't think demons have DNA, I'm sorry Gabriel.”
Moon Knight glances over his shoulder at the Hulk, but nods to Kilroy. "As long as he stays in this area, it's pretty much trashed and abandoned anyways. Let him be.." his eyes narrow with purpose and he looks back to Kilroy. "You have a lead on this?"
The Hulk throws the car across the empty part of the lot letting it roll. The green giant seem to be oddly sobbing. It isn't long until he is back in human form as Bruce on his knees naked but not caring. "Jack.." the man whispers. Does anyone know he just lost whom he considered his best friend?
Kilroy is aware of the bond between Bruce and Jack. He doesn't know how deep it is. He stands on a Rai stone and allows Moon or Gabriel to board if they want, and floats up and toward Bruce, landing. "We can get him back Bruce. I can track him." He looks at Moon and answers within Bruce's earshot. "But the portal I used last time to go to hell is...almost impossible to use. I know some who can open it up, and I have other means if those can't work, but ideally someone like Constantine or Zach would do it. But I can sense him. I know EXACTLY where he is, and I know the city can too. I will ask her when the time is right all the details we'll need to know to go and find him.
As the scene clears, a silvery streak arcs in from above, curving around into a loose spiral descent as it smoothly decelerates to hover above the scene. It comes to a stop near Moon Knight, and the man aboard it--tall, dark, dressed in a white silk robe--leans over to him. "Excuse the interruption. You were here for... the incident, just now?" he asks, clearly aware that something happened here but not quite what it was.
Gabriel joins Kilroy on the stone and rides down to street level with him. Once down he goes over to where his backpack was left behind, picks it up and returns to the group. "Well, it was just dumb luck that I got mixed up in this but if you all think I can help I'll hope in on the rescue trip." That's before he gets distracted by the hover bike coming in, which even around here isn't the most common of sighs, "Cool ride man."
Moon Knight rides down with Kilroy too. "Okay, so you can find him when we get there. I'll talk to Khonshu, see what sort of protection he may be able to afford travelers in hell.. but if anything is just, then saving Jack is. I think he'll help if he can." when Dyson appears on..a flying scooter Moon Knight ehs..? He doesn't recognize the man, or his conveyance. "..Technically.. I don't remember most of it. Who are you..?" he asks, a bit guardedly.
Bruce Banner raises his eyes to Kilroy, "Count me in." he tells him before standing up. Indeed he is naked but who cares. So he turns walking off likely to where he hide some stuff of his own to change into.
"My official operative designation is 'Dyson,'" the newcomer in white explains. He pauses to glance at Kilroy, nodding, and adds, "Thank you," before continuing, "My actual name is William Argent. Use whichever serves your purposes better." He casts a look around the area, frowning at Moon Knight. "I sensed a massive upheaval in the Astral Plane corresponding to this physical location, but it seems to have subsided now. I'm only trying to get some information about what happened here."
Kilroy says, “Pleased to meet you Dyson. Basically a demon possessed the protector of cities. It was the kind that could not be exorcized. The host had to die and it was too smart to fall for distraction. Jack is dead, but his soul is in hell. The city is safe. But hell is not. If you want contact information on how to help kill it..." a card is produced with an email, "Send your contact information here and you'll be notified.”
Kilroy nods to Moon Knight, "That sounds like a very viable plan." He also nods to Gabriel, "Any aid is appreciated.
He's probably talking about the dead...or at least slumped and not breathing...guy in the middle of the church.
Moon Knight is still watching Dyson, as if to gauge his concern in this matter.
Moon Knight looks to Kilroy. "..I'm gonna go see what I can turn up that might be of use with this. Can you find me if you need to? My..schedule's not exactly reliable."
Gabriel shrugs a bit in response to Kilroy's thanks, "Well, you and Moony have both helped me in the past so its only fair. And besides, what kind of person would I be if I didn't do everything in my power to save a good man's soul from hell?" Looking Dyson up and down he smiles a little bit and asks, "So, you work with Tony Stark by any chance? That looks like his kind of gear."
Kilroy says, “Wear your costume, be in New York and make sure you have $7.77 on you and I'll find you and be able to contact you." HE smiles at Gabriel, "I like the attitude."”
Dyson's expression darkens at the mention of Jack's death, and it darkens further still at the explanation. He takes the card, nodding slowly, and admits with a weary tone, "Hell. It had to be something supernatural, didn't it?" He pockets the card, looking between the others. "So the impact was purely indirect. You don't have any reason to believe this entity is directly active on the Astral Plane?" His manner remains generally businesslike and emotionally detached, apart from a general impression of irritation at the mention of Hell and possession.
Moon Knight hehs in Kilroy's direction.. "If I was always wearing the costume there probably wouldn't be trouble contacting you. But I'll have my weapons on me if that helps, and I should be able to manage the rest." he looks a bit surprised at Gabriel. "You're serious..?" he's surprised, but also sounds impressed. After what the kid just saw today, he wouldn't expect him to be back for more. But he's never been the sort to tell someone what dangers they can and can't risk. "Well..if either of you want to help, you're welcome as far as I'm concerned." he says, addressing Gabriel and Dyson both. "..And it looks like the demon and Jack both aren't up here anymore."
Kilroy nods to Dyson, "It's gone. Where I sent it, it won't be back for centuries. That's the one up side of these awful things." He nods to Moon Knight.
Moon Knight doesn't seem surprised by Kilroy's odd specifics, at any rate. "I'll see what I can learn." he promises earnestly, then heads off as well. Kilroy seems to have known more about this than the rest of them.. he trusts him to fill in the new arrivals.
Gabriel slings his backpack onto one shoulder after pulling out some business cards out of one of the side pockets. Offering out the cards he says, "Well, when you're ready, call me." On the cards there's just the name Gabriel and a phone number, nothing else. Once the cards are distributed he waves once to the group and start walking away, "See you all soon."
Kilroy is actually going to place Jack's body under a Rai stone and take it to the one person he is quite certain Jack would trust to take care of it with the connections to fix it in case something happens to him, but first he surrounds it in salt to protect it from the elements.
Belatedly answering Gabriel's question, Dyson says with an air of moderate distraction, "Stark's reputation is excellent, of course, but I'm afraid I've never had the pleasure." One jaw muscle twitches slightly at Moon Knight's words, but he nods again, and directs his next words at Kilroy. "Well, it sounds like you've dealt with the only elements that would directly concern me."
He takes and releases a slow breath, frustration bubbling slightly closer to the surface. "I'm afraid I know nothing of 'Hell' or how to get a soul out of it. I assume it's some outer realm where the mind can be trapped, independent from the body, but... it's observably supernatural. Barring a sudden and impressive advance in transdimensional science, I have nothing to offer you." He offers Gabriel a final nod as the man turns to depart.
Kilroy says, “Loki...can you perform a preservation spell and watch over his body until Bruce calms down? I think...Bruce is the best person to watch over him while I make some inquires.”
"Yes, I can do that." Loki sits down and casts a spell, surrounding the body in a green and gold sparkly field.
Dyson lingers a moment, casting a last look over the others, and then Loki starts to do magic. That appears to resolve the matter for him. He twists one handle of the jetbike's controls, as if gunning a motorcycle, and the repulsors glow, sending him skyward and then swiftly away from the scene.

[Heromux] Chase that Case!

Rumors have been flying recently. Through the internet and various underworld connections. Something valuable is being moved on March 9th. At 7PM it'll be leaving New York and heading into Gotham. But the thing is, no one really knows what it is. Some say its a massive sum of money. Others believe its a powerful weapon to give people an edge against super powered people. Several more rumors fly, surrounding the item in mystery. What is known is that whatever it is, will be in a metal suitcase in an armored car traveling along Interstate 87.
And true to tale, a warehouse in the Bronx opens and a fairly normal looking armored van starts driving. Windows are tinted and a flower-like logo is painted on the side like rumors say. About half way to Gotham, on the highway, there's the sound of screeching tires and crunching metal when a handful of cars crash into a wall of ice that sprang up in the middle of the street suddenly. The armored car slows to a stop not far from it but there's little reaction from the drivers within. Sharp eyes might spot something -in- the ice though. A hulking humanoid figure with glowing eyes slowly advancing through it...
Blue Delilah appears like a bright blue flash in the sky, coming down hard from an impressive leaps that started fifty feet away. She lands between the ice and the car, throwing a quick glance at the vehicle to assure herself nobody needs immediate medical attention. Then she faces the thing in the ice. She jabs a thumb at herself as she bellows. "I'm Blue Delilah, and you're under arrest you bad boy!"
Kilroy is worried about what this thing might be. He's sensed that the cash has been moving around in vast amounts in the underworld, and the rumors might have been deliberately placed. He's cautious, since the last thing he wants to be is another pawn in someone's gambit...not again, but in this case he is going to be as sure as he can. He flies through the air, and looks down at the ice. He's not going to attack right away since, quite frankly, he has no idea who or WHAT it might be, though Mr. Freeze is at the top of his most likely suspects. How many ice dudes could be running around? Mainly he wants to get a view of that case and keeps flying around the ice to spot it as soon as it emerges.
Goggles snapped down over her eyes, Selina Kyle had been lingering upon the top of one of the buildings that overlook the interstate. Whip snapped across her torso, she was upon all fours, lingering atop a vent that was spewing steam into the night air. True to her sources, there was the van - Selina brings up a hand to tap the side of her goggles, setting a marker upon it.
When the superheroes - and villains - start arriving.
Selina lifts her eyebrows up, letting her lips part into a wide smile. "Well, curiousity and the cat..." she says, launching herself forward off of the building then - lashing out her whip to wrap around the base of one of the highway signs, the Catwoman starting to swing onto the scene.
There's not quite chaos in the streets just yet but there is trouble. Several people have gotten out of their cars to see what's going on and others to yell at eachother. And while no one in the armored car seems hurt, there are a few people hurt in the cars that crashed into the ice.
Speaking of the ice, steam erupts in a doorway shape as the shadow figure stalks closer to the front. It obscures the figure from view and shortly after her announcement, Blue Delilah better be ready to move since a bolt of lightning is rocketing her way from within the steam.
"Pathetic Hatchling! Stand aside or face the wrath..." a voice comes from the fading cloud as a green skin, ridge-chinned figure emerges. "of the Power Skrull!"
He's not the only sign of troulbe. Nope. A semi that had been trailing behind the armored car has come to a stop too. The back of the trailer slides open and a handful of people in various snake-like costumes emerge. "Get the truck before some do-gooers show up!" King Cobra, current leader of the group, orders as he and his fellow snakey criminals rush the armored car.
Blue Delilah plants her feet firmly, intent on showing how much of a 'hatchling' she is by standing her ground and letting the bolt hit her. She balls her fists up seeing the grounp coming. "That's right, come and get it!"
Selina Kyle swings up, landing lightly upon the top of the pole that holds one of the traffic signs up. Running her tongue over her lips, the cat burglar remains out of the line of fire for the time being, watching Blue Delilah and Kilroy and friends start to respond to the mass hysteria.
Of course, Selina wasn't as keen on stopping casualties as she was about sticking her head into the car and seeing what was inside it. Another lash of her whip, and she swings across the street from sign to sign, hopping down from the sign above the armored car to land lightly atop it, pressing herself flat against the surface.
Kilroy remains flying over the car that has the case in it. He summons a penny inside of each of the armored cars and the semi truck....even ifhec an't track the case yet. In the meanwhile, he begins summoning a few Rai stones to help slow down cars that are in danger of getting carshed or crunched.
Unfortunately for Blue, she doesn't get her chance to prove just how tough she is. There's a blur of red, black, and blue as someone speeds in front of her. Lightning splashes across an invisible, skin-tight forcefield and smoke rises from an S-shield. "You okay? Almost got fried there," Superboy, trademark leather jacket and sunglasses on, smiles over his shoulder at Blue. "Ah...maybe the Kryptonian hatchling will be a more worthy opponent than a terran," Power Skrull speaks up. This earns a glare from Superboy who cracks his knuckles.
Those Rai Stones help stop the few people foolish enough to keepn driving and trying to get past the ice. A penny pops up in both the Serpent Society's truck and the armored car everyone is after without incident.
When Catwoman lands on the truck, there's still no reaction inside. If she looks down at the windows she'll be able to make out the outlines of two people in the cab but not much else thanks to the tint.
There is a reaction from the Serpent Society though, at least one member. Coachwhip, the only female member of the team along for the job and the one in the least snake-like costume, smiles to herself. "I'll deal with our guest," she says, starting to jump on cars as she gets closer. Soon enough, she's leaping high. "HAA!" she calls out as she jumps in Catwoman's direction and swings one of her chain-whips at the thief. The remaining three members: King Cobra, Puff Adder, and Cottonmouth, are approaching the back of the armored car.
Blue Delilah blinks in abject surprise as she's 'rescued'. She grins and swoons at Superboy. "I am now! You sure you got this guy? I'll take care of the civs at the wall." Thusly saying she gives a leap, landing by one of the cars that had crashed into the ice. Planting both hands on the side of the vehicle she shoves, sliding the car off of the interstate and toward the sidewalk in the hopes that EMTs will be able to get to the driver.
Kilroy eliminates the obvious, but keeps himself in reserve. He just....isn't sure what the hell is going on here and is suspicious. If anyone is in danger of getting crushed or run over, then he'll save them with a pile of quarters to land in 'softly' but he focuses for now on crowd and damage control, trying to get an eye on that case. Selina hisses, "Superman."
Selina's eyes were drawn towards Superboy briefly, the mistaken identity of the young man not really an issue. "Best collect my case and be on my wa..." she says then, starting to peer into the armored truck she was lingering atop of... when the chain whip lashes out at her. Catching the motion out of the corner of her eye, she flips forward towards the side of the truck, keeping ahold of it with both her hands.
Twirling around, she lands in a crouch back atop the thing, facing Coachwhip.
"Nah ah ah - the do-gooders are the other way. Just poor little kittens here..." she says, standing up straight then, spreading out her fingers and displaying the claws on the tips, "And you wouldn't want to end up /scratched/."
"Don't worry, I got this," Superboy replies to Blue, flashing a grin her way. It's short lived, the clone quickly dodging a blast of ice fired his way by Power Skrull. Both aliens quickly take to the air, Power Skrull turning metallic and trading thunderous blows with the Teen of Steel.
There are half a dozen cars in total for Blue to deal with. The drivers and passengers inside have injuries ranging from minor scratches and bruises to broken bones and some nasty cuts. The villains are leaving her alone as long as she stays out of the way though.
Atop the armored car, Coachwhip grins as her attack misses. "I know who you are, Catwoman. And little kittens shouldn't meddle where snakes are hunting. We've been hired to take this case," she says, preparing her whip for another attack. Her fellow Serpent Society members are working on getting the truck open, Puff Adder spitting acid onto the locks.
Blue Delilah sprints to a second crashed car and peers in at the driver. "Sir, are you all right? Just stay where you are, I'm going to get you off the road. Help's on the way." She looks across the hood of the car to make sure Superboy is okay, then chides herself as if the Kryptonian would need any help. She gets a good grip on the car and, as she did with the first, drags it off of the interstate proper and away from the battle. She begins a systematic run back and forth sliding, dragging, or carrying the damaged cars away from the fight.
Kilroy can't heal those in the cars and as long as they are OK, he immediately unleashes three salt golems to try and attack the sepent society members. They are moderately large and strong but not particularly skilled. They don't have to be. Kilroy's just trying to delay them.
"Tell you what, darling," says Selina at that point, slowly unfurling her whip from where she keeps it, snapping it to one side. A beat, and her eyes flicker behind her goggles towards Superboy. Delilah and Kilroy obviously were a concern as well, but the Super brand had a long and treasured history of being... problematic towards thieves.
"I'll take the case safely away from all of these meddling heroes, and I'll give it to you later?"
A beat further. "Kitten's honor, I won't double-cross you," she says, letting her smile track wider.
Thankfully for the thieves, Superboy is rather occupied. Up above, he's throwing punches and dodging ice and lightning blasts as he fights Power Skrull. He'll be a bit distracted.
A couple of the civilians are awake enough to talk to Blue and confirm they're okay. Surely enough, the young hero's work saves those people. And that's for the best, chunks of ice starting to fall off the wall and crashing down onto the pieces of interstate where the cars had been.
Coachwhip laughs, matching Catwoman's smile with one of her own. "How about we skip the chatter and get to what we know is going to happen?" she asks, snapping her whip to the side as well. She snaps her other wrist, a second whip unfurling from her gauntlets. "You're someone I've been hoping to fight one day. The word is you're one of the best there is with a whip."
The remaining three members of the Serpent Society don't notice the golems at first. Puff Adder's acid burns through the locks enough for the doors to start creaking open. There are three humanoid forms inside...but they don't seme to be moving or reacting at all. When the snake-themed men finally realize they're under attack, they put up a fight. King Cobra and Puff Adder perform rather well. The king's elastic nature and enhanced strength make snapping limbs off the golem rather easy. Puff Adder 'puffs' up to match the mook in height before spitting that powerful venom of his on top of it. Cottonmouth has much worse luck. He bites into one of the golems and while his bionic jaws easily penetrate the beast, he ends up spitting and cursing at the taste of the salt.
Blue Delilah gets the last car off of the road, ensuring each driver that they're going to be just fine. She turns to survery the scene, trying to orient herself to what's happening. Superboy's holding off Uglyface fine, check. There's a flying guy over..." Wait. Am I really seeing Catwoman? And...fighting on our side?" She boggles at the salt golems-no idea what to make of those. Yells. "Superboy, I've got the truck." She sprints toward the battle at the rear of the truck, balling her fists up as she charges the Society.
Kilroy creates two more golems to replace those dispatched. The golem forwhoever Delilah attacks will work with her to flank the villain but Kilroy still holds the bulk of his power in reserve in case of a suprise that needs to be kept in check. He keeps watching for the case, but is also watching the dueling whipsters.
Oh, certainly. Catwoman was fighting on your side, Blue Delilah.
Stretching out her spine a little bit, she lets her eyes draw shut, a luxurious sound leaving her as the second whip makes its appearance. "Patience is a virtue, Coachwhip," says Catwoman, letting her eyes briefly draw towards the heroes proper. "And I've just about run out of it," she says, her tone of voice sweet.
But there was a certain hardness in her eyes. Catwoman leaps backwards off of the truck, and lashes out her whip at the same time. What she was hoping to do was lash onto Coachwhip's waist and kinda use her as a pivot point to swing around and into the back of the truck, kicking a goon or two in the meanwhile. And if it ends up yanking Coachwhip off of the truck, bonus, right?
Otherwise, she would just land on the ground below the truck.
"What?" Superboy asks over his shoulder. Distracted by Blue, he gets blasted with an electrically charged punch and sent crashing into the ice wall.
Coachwhip isn't so easy to beat. She leaps back as well, flipping to avoid the whip and landing on the opposite side of the truck. She avoids the attack but she's out of Catwoman's way. And inside that truck...one might expect guards and yelling and guns. But there's none of that. No. Sitting in the back of the armored truck are three dummies in guard uniforms. One has the mysterious case cuffed to its plastic wrist. Through the little window in the truck, Catwoman will be able to see into the cab...two more dummies up front and some kind of remote control tech on the wheels and pedals. Clearly something isn't right...but hey...there's the case.
Cottonmouth is pinned down but ends up saved when Coachwhip's whips pull the golem off him and smash it. She seems pretty irritated Catwoman didn't stick around to fight. King Cobra scowls, repeating his smashing before rushing towards the armored car. "Hands off the case, cat!" he demands.
Puff Adder meanwhile is melting a second golem. He doesn't notice Blue Delilah charging him until she crashes into his back and sends him stumbling off balance. "The hell?!" Blue Delilah missed what happened to SB. She plows into Adder, grinning. "Everyone out of the pool!" Her powerful thighs and calves constrict and then expand like a small explosion, launching her thirty feet straight up onto the air. She brings her knees up to her chest and throws her arms around her shins. She comes down in cannonball formation until the very last instant, when she kicks out both legs at the ground. Her intent is to use her weight and her strength to create a siesmic impact when she lands, just enough to hopefully make all of the earthbound combatants take a hard sit.
Kilroy is torn because he's getting REALLY bad vibes about this car....but he has Veolus summon two more salt golems to distract the snakes but buys Superboy a bit more time by summoning six Rai stones rotating between the Power Skrull and Superboy. He does this only long enough to let him catch his breath and then goes back to watching the car...and the case when it emerges. Catwoman was nearly certain that there was a trap there. But there was the case... the irresistable case. Eyes glittering with a certain excitement that bordered on the unspeakable. Running her tongue over her lips, she glances over the dummy guards. Lunging forward, she sinks her claws into the case, turning around.
"But you didn't say please!" she calls out after King Cobra, bringing up her feet to kick one of the dummies his way. Hoping to distract him enough so that she can start slipping around him, presumeably to make a getaway.
Superboy is fast to catch his breath. He rockets out of the ice, slaming fist-first into a confused Power Skrull.
The Serpent Society keeps fighting the golems, Puff Adder turning in time to see Blue jump. And then she comes down and sends things rumbling. Car alarms blare, some of the dummies in the armored truck fall apart, and members of the serpent society are knocked off their feet.
In the car, King Cobra curses as he's hit by the dummy and sent sprawling. Catwoman's got an opening to get away with the case...and the mannequin arm its attached to provided she doesn't get knocked off balance by Blue or caught by another hero.
Blue Delilah woots when he foot stomp succeeds. "You bad boys are all under arrest." She spies Catwoman dashing off and grins. "Gotta admit, that lady has style." She growls at the Society snakes. "You guys stay down. I mean it! This fight is over." She bends over, digger her tiny fingers into the asphault. With a grunt she rips a small chunk of the street free and holds it over her head. She bellows. "Catwoman! Drop the case and heads up!" Then she throws her chunk like a discus, aiming for the legendary criminal's legs.
Kilroy doesn't need anything anywhere nearly as violent as he just adds a penny inside of the case. And done. But he's more concerned with examining the dummies DRIVING the car. What is actually powering this thing? Is there some kind of a transmitter? He will wrap Quipu around those who have been knocked prone to keep them that way.
Of /course/ Selina takes the opprotunity to try to dash away. Bouncing over a fallen bit of rubble, she clutches the case to herself. Leaping forward as the chunk of asphalt! Was thrown at her legs with a bit of force, Selina just barely manages to clear the asphalt...
But her foot didn't quite make it. Falling head over heels as she was knocked off balance, the case goes flying away from her as she tumbles to the ground in a heap.
The case and mannequin arm clatter away, coming to a stop in front of a VW Bug abandoned by its driver when the chaos started. The serpent society is bound up and Superboy has the Power Skrull busy. If anyone wants to make a dash for the case or see what's inside, now is the time to do it. The truck is completely normal aside from the tech attached to the pedals and wheel. Cameras and transmitters...someone rigged the whole thing up to be controlled by remote
Blue Delilah busies herself tying up the Society trio, using whatever materials happen to be handy; even a lamp post if need be. Once they're secure she looks up to see how Superboy is faring, and looks at the other flying guy. She decides he's a hero likewise and glowers at the Society before she breaks into a run, intent on getting the case.
Kilroy is rediculously paranoid but he keeps expecting the truck to blow up or the case to blow up or....it's just too....he is ready to cover any explosion in Rai stones if he needs to. He's waiting.
From her position on the ground, Selina gives her head a shake, bringing up her hand to pull her goggles off of her head. Bringing up her whip, she lashes it above her head, before striking out - hoping to catch Delilah's ankle as she runs towards the case.
There's no explosions, no fires...everything seems normalish. Aside from the remote control tech in the armored car full of dummies.
Superboy's doing fine, gaining the upper hand against the Power Skrull up above. That fight will be over soon enough. The only conflict left is on the street to get the case.
Blue Delilah squawks when Catwoman's whip hisses around her ankle. The tiny hero hits the ground with a thud, making the ground shake a bit. She flips over on her back to see what got her, and is much surprised. She gawks at Catwoman. "But you were fighting on our side! You know I can't let you take that case." She looks up at Kilroy, shouts. "Hey, hero! Get the case!" Then she sits up, wraps both hands around the whip, and begins reeling Catwoman toward her.
Kilroy finally decides to 'take a side' though he was far more interested in tracking it. He summons a Rai stone above and below, and lifts it into the air. Is he curious what's in it? Sure he is, but the remote control drivers is....an ill omen. If he's going to open it he's going to do so in the middle of nowhere thousands of feet up in the air. But for now he's just going to lift it up and FAST along with himself.
Well, Catwoman couldn't fly. And right now, she was a bit tied up anyways. Eyes widening as the young woman starts easily reeling her in, Catwoman digs her heels in at first, until she kinda topples backwards onto her rear. If Deliliah drags her in close enough, she would bring up her foot and give the other a kick - otherwise, at this point, she would just be attempting to escape.
"Look out!" comes a call from Superboy. Why? Well he just clashed with Power Skrull and after an electrical explosion, the dazed shapeshifter is heading rather quickly for Delilah. She may want to get out of the way.
Meanwhile, the case doesn't seem to be reacting much at all. It just heads up into the air on the rock, waiting for Kilroy to open it. Still with a mannequin arm attached.
Blue Delilah glowers at the legendary criminal she's dragging toward her. "I'm sorry, but I have to bring you in." She hears Superboy's yell and jerks her head up, then yelps. She throws herself frantically to one side, screaming at Catwoman. "Look out!"
Kilroy begins slowly constructing a Rai Stone suit on top of his coin chain mail, to increase his toughness, but he slowly also constructs a salt hand which begins fiddling at the latch of the case remotely.
"Not this time, little kitten," says Catwoman - with her whip released, she yanks it back, leaping away from the site of impact of the Power Skrull. The powers being thrown around were way over her ability to handle - and so her main alternative right now? Running. Running towards the side of the interstate, bringing her goggles up over her eyes again - and glancing up to the case, 'clicking' them in so that she can track it.
The latch on the case is easy to open, not even locked. Then it's just two simple clasps and the metal case can be opened. It's slightly heavy for a case but that's easy to overlook. The case is lined with a thin layer of lead. No ticking...no beeping...seems safe to open.
Power Skrull crashes down into the pavement and ...well that just looks gruesome how he hits and kind of splatters. Most shockingly...he groans and starts getting up, green body shifting and shaping back to normal. Skrulls are handy like that.
Blue Delilah rolls and kippups to her feet, looking astonished. She peers around for Catwoman and uts, scolding herself. Then she balls her fists up and squares her shoulders facing Power Skrull. "It's over. Stay down, you're beaten."
Kilroy finally finishes constructing the Rai stone suit and opens the Case. He's now beginning to wonder if it's Grey Poupon or some kind of publicity stunt of 'what would you do for a Mentos' but....he is still curious and opens it up anyway.
And Catwoman is safely away at this point - lurking as best as she can out of sight, her eyes fixated at the case.
The case slowly creaks open....and cue the sound of party favors and party poppers. Confetti pops up into the air and there's an automated 'Yaaaaay!'. Along with that, something comes flying from the case!...a boxing glove that thumps against Kilroy's armor then starts falling. A plastic rabbit head with clowny face paint on a spring bops and sways in the breeze emitting a tinny, goofy voice again and again. "Gotcha! Hahaha ha haha! Gotcha! Hahaha ha haha! Gotcha! Hahaha ha haha! Gotcha! Hahaha ha haha!..." It's got a buisiness card attached to it too. In bright, colorful letters it reads: 'You've been pranked by....THE PRANKSTER!'
Power Skrull looks at Delilah and at Superboy as he lowers down, ready for more of a fight. His eyes trail upwards towards the case and he grows at the sight. "This was a waste of time," he snaps, pressing a button on his wrist and vanishing in a flash of bright violet light. Teleport escape.
Kilroy laughs in spite of himself, but will take a very thorough shower when he gets home in case it was like...an ebola boxing glove or something. At this point he then carefully flies, and sets the case down where he last saw Cat woman run into the shadows. Maybe she can get $50 at a pawn shop or something.
He then uses some Rai stones to move the wrecked vehicles in some easier ways to ease traffic but flies off still smirking. With a little snort, Catwoman slides off into the night. Yes, she sees Kilroy leaving the case - but she wasn't /that/ desperate for money - just new and unique things. So she vanishes into the dark, never to be seen again tonight.
Superboy stares for a moment, pushing his sunglasses up. "What the hell?" he mutters, shaking his head. He starts moving to help clean up cars and demolish the ice wall.
And somewhere in Metropolis, The Prankster is laughing and spinning in his chair because that's how he rolls.

The Conneticut residence is well known as a source of wonder and aggravation in this section of the Island for generations. It was bought on the cheap by an unknown millionaire called Yankee, who bought the place cheap and put hundreds to work expanding and maintaining it but never spent time there. It was neglected during the war, and rented out to various fly by night want to be Gatsby's for two decades until the son spruced it up with all kinds of art and decorum. Then in the late 90's it went silent, suddenly being rented out again and left to fall into rot until Kilroy took it over.
Since it has been very well kept rot.
Until three weeks ago when SOMEONE began hiring local crews to restore everything, not just the lawn. And there was quite a bit to restore but peeks over the hedges show that it is in sparkling condition, but rumors swirl around the place.
For for the first time in decades, New York socialites have been INVITED to the residence. It is a masquerade ball, and the gilded gates have been opened. Somehow, without anyone looking, the residence has become one of the fanciest places in New York, with the party drifting out in warm weather to the hedge maze, the polished ball room, or the dining room. Indeed, all the lower floors have been opened and all manner of New York's richest and most powerful have been invited.
But there is no sign of the host. Everyone is curious if it is the scandalous mutant (or is that mutant sympathizer) Kilroy...or his DEAD father, who has had his name on the invitations hand written and hand delivered by trained actors dressed in 17th century french regalia to the majority of those present.
But there are other reasons there are some here tonight. For a Mask has been stolen, an artifact of great power. Kilroy has notified Loki of the location of the mask tonight, and his attempt to steal it back.
Lois Lane was not magical, regardless of what some might say. She was also not a mutant, nor meta, nor goddess. She was a mundane woman in a world that was anything bit. So of course she was driving a car filled with extraordinary beings. In the front passenger seat, Loki Odinson, exiled prince of Asgard. In the back; Dr. Bruce Banner, a literal Dr. Jekyll, Moon Knight, a man blessed and cursed by a god, and Jack Hawksmoor, a being who chatted with cities. "Ready to crash this party?" She asks with a tight grin, as the rented car heads towards the mansion. She's dressed well for the event, considering that things will probably get very dangerous soon. "What's the plan?"
One very uncomfortable Jack Hawksmoor, in a rented tux and doing his best to manage the optical illusion of shoes. He's going to stand out like a sore thumb. "We're a good way out from the city center, so please try to keep me from having to get into a battle of wills with a god again." He peers towards the mansion. "Also, this is CHC's turf. That gives him...certain advantages too."
Moon Knight has been decidedly anxious ever since the dog figurine appeared and stole the mask.. and right in the midst of a spell that was meant to restore Loki fully, if it had been allowed to complete... instead the result was the mask gone, Loki still powerless.. and Moon Knight still apparently the vessel for a part of the young god's wayward power. It's nothing as strong as it was before.. a blessing on the one hand, because it seems to mean he isn't automatically dyed green and obviously looking out of place.. non-Euclidean as Lois had jokingly remarked. He looks normal now, if fancied up and with a mask so as to better sneak into the party; it may surprise some, but he 'cleans up' with surprising ease. Another of his 'tenants', perhaps. The downside of course is that there is only a fraction of Loki's magic left in any state to defend the vulnerable godling..and according to Kilroy, a ticking clock before that too will be drawn back to the repaired mask, and Loki with it.. so at Lois' question he says, "I was hoping I could follow the divine bond from myself and Loki to the mask.. but this place.." he shakes his head as if he were trying to dispel some sort of fog. "It's so thick with magic, I'm not sure how well I'll be able to."
The penguin suit isn't very comfortable nor is being in the middle of the back seat. Bruce pulls a little at his collar as he listens to the talk of what the plans are while his own is basically not to break things. There is a few beads of sweat on his forehead, "We there yet? I think I need some air." no that has nothing to do with planning other than a personal thing. Plus of course they don't want him going mean and green in the backseat.
Fortunately, Zachary Zatara was already invited to the party, so he's there in the first place, in an antique-looking tux -- red instead of black, this time -- and a particularly fine mask marked with filigree and delicate little details. It's a superb outfit to have in these surroundings, but then it would be since he's also trying to make sure he can put hands on what he needs to, in as quickly as possible.
Jack Hawksmoor tugs the mask he brought...a pretty simple one...out of his pocket. "My senses are fine. I might be able to help...I've had difficulty sensing the mask if nobody's wearing it, but I still might be able to find it." He glances at Moon Knight. "Guess there are advantages to NOT being magic.

"We're almost there. It'd be suspicious if we all go in at once. If our genders were reversed, maybe not..." She tries a grin, under her sparkling mask. "So, who wants to be my date for the evening?" She doesn't want Loki going with her - the godling would be recognized by their target, she fears. She stops the car. "Well, show time, my friends. Let's go kick some butt while sharply dressed!"
Moon Knight 's mouth quirks at Jack from under his own mask, styled to suggest a bird. "Hopefully between us we can manage something. Do you know anything about this Cash person? I have a feeling I ran into him earlier in Times Square.." he snorts a laugh at Lois' remark, but agrees wholeheartedly with the sentiment.
Socialite? Nope. Part of a sneaky scheme to break in and steal a mask? Also nope. Axiom's on a mission of his own. One handed to him by one of those angels at the Infinite Embassy. He didn't get a lot of details but what he did get was enough to have him prepping for a fight. He wasn't invited to the party but that hasn't stopped him from inviting himself. While other are entering the gates and dressed for a party, Axiom's taking the back way in. Over hedges and fences and in a black version of his costume, he's sticking to the shadows and avoiding being noticed as he sneaks towards the mansion proper. It's not the same as sneaking in the city but he's had to adapt to much worse.
Wiping his forehead, Bruce pulls his black from his pocket. The mask is black with green trim along the edges. "I can escort you inside, Miss Lane. If no one else wants too."
"You go ahead, Bruce. I need to be free to move." A pause. "The mask is in the ballroom. There's also some very nasty..." He pulls out a notebook and pen, from a different pocket, and sketches a few things. "Avoid these spots if you can. Booby traps and security stuff. Exotic."
Moon Knight leans to glance across Bruce at the notepad Jack is drawing on. "Electronic?" he queries of the traps, then blinks. "-The- mask? You found it, then?"
Lois Lane chuckles. "I'd love to, Dr. Banner." She exits the parked car, looking over the grounds. She sees a flicker of movement - a familiar figure, but too obscured to recognize. She shrugs. "Alright. Bruce and I will waltz around looking fancy, drawing attention from you guys." she says. She leans against the car casually. "Well, that was simple. Guess that means it's going to be hard to obtain. Nothing's easy as it looks, I've found."
Once the car is parked Bruce reaches across Jack opening the door as a hint. Though as Moon now leans across him to look at the drawing, "Yes we will be fancy and I'll try not to stomp your feet." Climbing over Jack he gets out almost stumbling down as he does so. Putting the mask on he glances at Lois while trying to straighten his tie. "This darn thing."
"It's in a ballroom with several hundred people in it," Jack says as he climbs out of the car. "Guess what they're all wearing." He waves the mask, which is black and white, at them and then pulls it on. He doesn't wait for the others before heading into the party.
Lois Lane clicks her tongue, shaking her head at Bruce. "Here, let me." She straightens his tie with a smile, smoothing out his suit as well. She pulls a comb from her purse, and quckly neatens the scientist's hair. "Much better." With a smile, she readjusts her mask, and offers her arm to Bruce. "I'm ready."
Moon Knight gets out on the other side to avoid the pileup, but frowns. "...Guys, there's not just people in there. There's gods. Almost half a dozen, counting Loki."
Axiom's quick as he crosses the grounds but he slows down as he gets close to the building. Crouching low, he checks for any signs of alarms or security measures. Ideally he's hoping to find a way in undetected. There are supposed to be tons of people inside and he wants to try to do this quietly so there's no panic or danger to them.
There are of course guards on the outside to keep the riffraff out but once inside, they don't seem to be paid to care. That should answer the question of who is throwing this gig, but that is dashed or at least made unclear when the "host", Kilroy Capital Conneticut, is announced as such and a space is cleared in the room as he is announced. No one else has been announced, and he says, "Welcome to my home. Too many years have gone by before we hosted an event. And I thank you for your attendance." He doesn't sound or look thankful, but is diplomatic enough that he is immediately swarmed by folks, socialites, curiosity seekers and a few reporters.
No one has noticed the interlopers/heroes in the slightest.
Jack glances over his shoulder. "Got it." And then he continues into the party. Not bothered by the presence of gods, apparently. Of course, they might be on his side. He's focused, besides, on the mask. A few heads do turn as he comes in - he definitely looks like the guy who won his ticket to this shindig in a raffle.
Once Lois gets him situated, Bruce pulls out something from his pocket. This might be something Stark has given Zach stays very clear of Kilroy, not too comfortable with what he sees. He can hobnob with the best of them, but something feels distinctly off about this...not the least of which is the whole presence of major metaphysical beings thing. So, with untouched champagne flute in hand, he mills about. Maybe his senses can help pick up the mask, since he is at least familiar enough with it from recent contact. him or they worked on together. "Here." he hands each an earpiece, "Just whisper and we can hear each other." before placing one into own ear. He takes Lois' arm, "Let us go then."
A few of the patrons sneer at Jack as he comes in, a lot of the guards look at him sideways, but no one really interferes. This is too unknown a situation for them, and they consider anything to be a potential threat. The mask is not sensed, however.
Zach stays very clear of Kilroy, not too comfortable with what he sees.
This is Kilroy's party? Wasn't Kilroy the one who came and warned Loki? Marc had the impression that meant Kilroy wasn't the host, but..perhaps this is his means of making a distraction? He accepts the earbud from Bruce with an impressed nod. "Thanks." he says, tucking it in place. Whatever the case, with Kilroy, he squares his shoulders and puts on a surprisingly charming smile as if he were slipping into a familiar coat, heading into the glittering throng and also making his way to the ballroom. He may not be able to tell where the gods are..but he is Loki's avatar, or at least Moon Knight thinks so. He's hoping he'll know the vessel containing the remainder of Loki's power when he sees it.
Lois Lane smiles and puts the earbud in, a beatific smile her companions might recognize as the one she wore while dealing with a particularly obnoxious interviewee. Not that she dislikes Bruce; it's the fact that she's hiding her nervousness and whatever else she's feeling. With a nod, she leads Bruce into the mansion. "Act casual, and don't get offend. This is the upper crust." She has no idea who - or what- may be milling around, but she's not too afraid. After all, she has a Hulk.
Axiom makes a slight face as he steps over a bear trap. He's careful to go around others, quietly thinking whoever set them up needs a good smack upside the head. He starts to step forward but pauses as he recognizes the signs of some magical defense. It takes a little squinting...literal and metaphorical...but when he figures out where the trap is exactly, he sighs silently and slips on. When he gets close enough to a window, he starts trying to get himself inside.
Jack Hawksmoor murmurs. "Also, there's somebody trying to break in," he adds to the others. Ignoring those sneering at him, he claims a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. Mostly for camouflage. "They're doing a good job so far." That's the very quietest of whispers. But...hundreds of people. All wearing masks. This is not going to be that easy.
A waiter with a tray comes up behind Lois and said, "Orderv? Horse De Vorxes?"
Jack is being ignored until finally a large body guard type looks him up and down and asks, "Who let YOU in here?"
Axiom looks like he can get in easily. Blending might be harder. Most of these costumes are not superheroesque.
Walking in with Lois as she is the belle of the ball, Bruce isn't as used to these things as others but he isn't a total street rat. Hulk..Hunk.. Indeed she has one of the two not that he himself is considered handsome like most.
Marc lets Grant mingle and laugh with the crowd..Grant even recognizes a few people, masks or no. Marc is busy in the meanwhile, thinking... the mask wouldn't be just on anyone. That red dog came and took it... he's sure it was the statuette he took off the lich in Times Square. Well..now he knows what it does. Could it be that's why the lich took it from Kilroy, before Moon Knight ended up delivering the mask anyways? If that lich took it, it wouldn't just be on anyone. He looks around, wondering if it might be on display, perhaps.. barring that, perhaps on the lich himself, so he keeps an eye for anyone with that stiff prideful demeanor, possibly on the skinny side. It's not much, but he's narrowing it down as best he can.
Zach's path takes him on a collision course for Grant's, and he doesn't notice until it's almost too late to correct; fortunately he doesn't spill his drink or bowl over the other man, but he does stop and look at his hand, lifting his mask slightly to show that, yes, this is him.

Unaware of Jack having detected him, Axiom slips into a window. He's not too worried about blending. Once he's sure he's out of sight, he takes something from his belt. A small charm with a pre-arranged spell ready. Just a simple illusion to make him look like some charming young socialite blond meant to be there. He waits for a chance to slip into the party to mingle...and scan about for any more signs of trouble, trap, lich, or mask. Lois Lane raises an eyebrow slightly. There was a commotion, but she knew going to help Jack might blow her cover too soon. So she keeps a loose hold on Bruce's arm, lightly guiding him through a drifting walk around the room. It seems casual, but it allows them to observe as much as they can. "The mask turns invisible when on someone, I remember. Look for someone grinning like a devil."
Jack Hawksmoor turns to the bodyguard. He glances around, then lowers his voice, looking directly at the guy. "Private investigator. Client bought me the ticket. She would *not* appreciate you blowing my cover." The rest of the group will hear Jack's fairly casual lie leavened with a fair bit of truth.
In a room full of Bankers, Lawyers, Politicians, Venture Capitalists and Reporters just to name a few, quite a few are grinning like the devil though none have that particularly DEMONIC grin.
Axiom is able to blend in seamlessly with the charm, and he notices that it is working...well. Very VERY well, the magic strengthened in this area considerably.
Kilroy spots the others and keeps trying to make his way toward them but people keep coming up to him and talking and each time he stops and politely answers them. Every time.
The body guard sneers a little but shrugs and ignores Jack. He's help.
"That can be any guy when a woman walks by." Bruce happens to say in comment. Though he does glance around for anyone grinning like an idiot perhaps like a dog with its tongue hanging out. Walking along with Lois he bumps his knee against something while not paying much attention, "Oww...Sorry." he tells Lois while rubbing his kneeing.
Grant gives Zach a quizzically blank look when the mask is tipped up, though greets him cordially. He starts to offer some small talk-- it's so different Zach could almost wonder if he'd detected the wrong person in the magic saturated environment.. but then the bird masked man grabs Zach by the shoulder and hisses, "We only have until midnight to find the mask." the intensity winks out a moment later, Marc taking control to do another sweep of the nearby crowd. ..Kilroy looks rather stopped up, doesn't he? Strange..
Zach matches small talk with intensely insignificant observations! He's good at that, even if it's kind of a banal skill to have. And then suddenly he's grabbed by the shoulder, and that jostles him out of the 'upper crust glaze' of his eyes. "What, midnight? Who stole it, the Fairy Godmother?"
The waiter trips and nearly drops his tray all over at least five guests but at the last minute grabs it while something drops out of his pocket. In the chaos it is kicked away into the crowd as a gaggle of irate socialites, three of them in their seventies growl and point duck headed canes at Bruce scolding his manners.
"And I only spot one," Jack adds, once the bodyguard has moved on. And now he's trying to make his way through the crowd towards Kilroy, although he doesn't want to shove anyone or do anything uncouth that might attract more attention from security.
Lois Lane pats Bruce on the shoulder. "Take it easy." She levels glares at the old people. "He forgot his cane today, you'll forgive a sickly man, yes?" doing her best post accent. The kicked object gains her attention - what was it? "A moment, my dear?" she tells Bruce, casually walking into the crowd, looking for whatever was dropped...
As Jack and Zach approach Axiom they hear some murmurs, "I say, remarkable, singular gift. I'm impressed..."
"I know, stunning, isn't it? Where does he find the time to learn it all?"
"What will you ask?"
"Likely price of Roxxon tomorrow I think..."
"Ha!"
Marc blinks, distracted, trying to pick up the thread of the disjointed conversation with Jack. "A zombie, actually." he murmurs. "I kind of wonder if he might know." he nods to Kilroy and heads that way too.
"A Fairy Zombiemother. Charming." Zach adjusts his mask a bit and follows just behind Marc. He's casual about all of it, but he certainly doesn't miss the snippets of conversation -- it's another of his uncommon skills, used in a place like this where it's essential to keep abreast of ten different mini-conversations in order to keep oneself afloat socially.
The fact that magic is working so well, even from his simple charm, has Axiom's attention. It's a sign of things being bad. He doesn't really socialize but he gives a few polite smiles and 'excuse me's...disguised voice even having a British accent. He spots some of the others and is a little surprised to see them. He shakes it off though since that's a good thing. Humming quietly, he murmurs a small spell under his breath. One he hopes will lead him towards Cold Hard Cash wherever he is. He's pretty sure the zombie magic guy will be the source of all the trouble for the night.
It wasn't his intention of being a klutz but at least its keeping attention elsewhere. "Many apologies." Bruce tells the men waving canes at him. He coughs out while covering his mouth as she mentions him being sickly, "Yes, darling. I'll just wait here." he watches as she goes into the crowd. Going to lean against a chair it breaks and Banner goes into the floor ungracefully. "This is why I rarely get invited to anything." he says lightly to be heard over the earpieces while laying on his back.
"What's the price of this house?"
"385 billion furnished, 300 without."
"What's the price of a nice Sunday afternoon?"
"To you, $9."
"How much should I put in my kid's college fund?"
"$20,214, excuse me I-"
"What's the price of bonds in Argentina right now?"
"$595 on the 20 year yield, but I-"
The women are still chirping angrily at Bruce but the others have left him off.
Lois Lane pretends to trip, as she finds the dropped object. "Oh, I'm alright." She swiftly stuffs the small statuette in her purse, under the commotion of people helping her up. "I'm just as bad a klutz as my beloved over there." She winces as she hears a chair breaking. She owed Bruce a nice dinner for all he's going through, She stands up, brushing off her dress. "Thank you, all over you." She sits down, looking faint. It's an act. "Found the red dog. It was being carried by a waiter, but Bruce bumped him and made him drop it." she whispers. "How about the cost of this bottle of champagne, Kilroy," Jack says by way of greeting as he approaches. He's wearing a mask, but that probably won't stop the money god from recognizing him. The question is...what does Kilroy know about what's going on?
Marc frowns. Money..? All questions about money? He doesn't know exactly what's going on, or about Kilroy, frankly, but he knows something about curses. He slips close to Kilroy shortly after Jack, not saying anything for the moment..
Kilroy says, "That's nothing because it was given as a gift by a terrorist cell leader to my father, in fact I'd pay you to take it and you all need to le-"
"What's the price of the moon?" Asks a patron
"For you, priceless."
"What do I need to do to get better?" Asks another
"Go see the doctor and follow his advice....""
Getting up Bruce begins to fix himself before moving to where Lois is sitting. "So sorry, darling. Seems this isn't my night." he says pretending to check her over, "You are alright?" grabbing a glass of something as a waiter passes by he offers it to her, "Have a drink and relax."
Marc asks Kilroy, as if just offering a light joke, "How many dollar bills would I have to lay end to end to reach what I'm looking for?"
Kilroy says, "51 end to end"
"What kind of dog should I get?"
Kilroy finally gets an edge in and looks at Jack and Mark, Ackbar like, "It's a trap!"
And the lights go out.
"Lois, pull the..." Jack's too late, though. The lights go out, and for a moment, his right eye glitters red. It's dark, but he's got senses other than vision. And nobody can see him. He kicks off the fake shoes, dropping into a slight crouch there in the middle as he reaches out to establish the lay of the land, as it were, that way.
Zach was about to ask his own facetious question when the lights go out and they're alerted that it's a trap. "Well I *guessed* that much." I mean, really? A masquerade ball? Who was actually going to come to something like that and *not* think something fishy's going on? At least his initial suspicions have been proved correct, though he is left to wonder if those mega-powerful deity figures are going to show off in the darkness. Most of them don't like dark; it prevents them from being as obviously important. Not that he'd *say* that out loud.
Lois Lane takes the glass, gratefully. She's about to take a sip when the lights go out. Wonderful. She takes Bruce's hand, grateful that they're both sitting. "Stay close to me." It's a quiet request. She wasn't about to try and find her way in the dark. "Stay calm."
Moon Knight was about to take Kilroy by the arm with a laugh, keeping up the facade of a party trick when he blurts his warning and the lights go out. He hisses to Kilroy, "What happened?"
You say, "When they ask the price of something I am compelled to answer...it's the nature of the gift....Somehow father found out about it...."
You say, "He's...here...somewhere..."
Jack Hawksmoor is still in that crouch nearby. "Stick near me. I don't need light as much as most. And I suspect your daddy dearest has the mask, too. Okay. What can he do? The basics?" What can the guy do WITHOUT the mask, he means. His voice is very low.
Axiom had been thinking of knocking the lights out himself...at least briefly...when they went out. He tensed, hands flexing a little. Darkness makes stealth easier so he starts moving. Used to moving in the dark, his eyes adapt easily enough and he heads for a little spot out of the way. Taking a deep breath, he tries again to seek out the source of the sudden darkness. He knows one way that should be a more effective method of searching but he's trying to hold out on using it due to it being more flashy than quiet bit of tracking magic. Moon Knight curses under his breath. He can't see.. he should be able to see in the dark..he keeps hold of Kilroy and reaches for Jack's voice, "Maybe we can use that ability. How many dollar bills away is the mask now?" he asks under his breath, starting a blind game of hot-and-cold with the alarmed crowd. "Jack, you can see?" Kilroy says, “He's a lich, and he's siphoned off my power which means he has all my old powers, he's undead, and he knows a lot about magic, and he's had 40 years to prep this place with god knows what so he likely has all kinds of magical objects. With the mask...Gods I can only imagine.”
"Are you sentimentally attached to this place?" Jack inquires, in a very casual tone. "And see, not exactly...it's not quite the same as vision."
"So...zombies," Zach quietly mentions, staying close to Moon Knight and Kilroy. "Should I produce some sort of holy symbol? Holy light? Holy *water*? I could probably manage something like that. Though it doesn't work with every zombie. Maybe um...maybe I could just make some will-o-the-wisps to distract?"
Lois Lane can do nothing but wait in the dark, as voices call out. She's keenly away of how useless she is right now. She kicks off her shoes, tucking them under the chair, all my feel. She keeps her hand on Bruce's to try and keep him calm. She didn't need a rage monster right now. "Guys, I;m sitting with Bruce. What should I do with the statue?"
You say, "Not...really. My grandfather used it to give people jobs and then it was just a tax asset. Asc-Father liked it a lot. And he's a shade, a Greek version so holy light and water should do some, but it depends on the context."
The murmur in the crowd has begun to build...people are approaching panic....there is also an unearthly silence. Why hasn't he made his move?
"Holy power?" Moon Knight echoes. "I burned him before...Khonshu did. The lich ran away in the end. How many bills away is the mask now?
You say, "Wait, you have the statue?" He 'looks' at Lois, "Call the mask! NOW!'
"Holy power can-""
The lights going out isn't something he was expecting but then again he was almost expecting some odd Stark entrance. Bruce gives the had of Lois a squeeze as he attempts taking her advice of staying calm. No the Hulk doesn't need to come out and play in the dark. Suddenly there is a crash nearby and Bruce's pants is wet in the wrong places, "Man.. Someone spilled something on me." not that he can see who or what it is exactly.
"Lois. Call the mask," Jack repeats, in case she didn't hear Kilroy. "Get it to the kid." Then, to Kilroy, "Alright. Nice to know my options are open."
Zach flicks his wrist. "Yloh gnitaolf ssorc spmal." And probably in one of the evenings more ill-advised acts, some holy floating crosses appear, and they're luminous, like lamps. It's one of the most surreal things that the partygoers have probably ever seen, but...there it is.
There is a voice in the dark. Axiom can see it. So can Kilroy (sense), Zach can now see, Moonknight is drawn like a moth to flame, and Loki can sense it quite well.
The waiter puts the mask on, alas too late, for there is a green cloud and lightning that surrounds him as dollar signs appear in his eyes, and the thick green skinned THING of a humanoid ...
Moon knight is closest, with a nod or head shake from Moon Knight ashe had asked the hot and cold questions....but it does him little good as he gets four Rai stones appear out of nowhere surrounding him in a stone cage...for the moment.
"Well heroes, I'm sure this is the moment where you all get righteous on me, and try to attack, but before you do, know that I've poisoned about half the people here...and the antidote is very specific, found only in a south side hospital approximately four miles away. They have enough for everyone here, but since none of you are speedsters or teleporters, I'd focus on that....
"A prismatic sphere opens up around him, "While I dine on the rest of your little God friend...oh and Kilroy? Some friends are here for you..."
AT this point not people or henchmen but...MICE...rather...mice spirits pour out of the walls and begin chittering at a million miles a second, likely illegible to everyone here, but not to Kilroy...and...after trying to resist...he doesn't do anything but...'chitter'...back...again and again and again."
"But by all means, let's rumble and tumble and let the good VIP's of the city die shall we?"
Jack Hawksmoor steps over to Zach, holding out the glass of champagne he took earlier. "This. To that hospital. So they can find the antidote." None of them are teleporters? The lich is an idiot...Jack can teleport, but he's slower and his method tends to mess up complex chemicals that aren't Jack. Would probably scramble the poison. If the glass is poisoned. He's gambling that it is.
Moon Knight can't see well, but he can tell four slabs of stone just walled him in even before the glow starts up. He hears Jack and Zach, close as they are, reassured about the poison even as Moon Knight fights to the surface, desperate to get the mask to Loki.. but that's not the best way to do it. Before Moon Knight can take over Marc calls into the mic, "Lois, call the mask! That statue will make it come to you!" along with everyone else urging her.
Lois Lane could almost roll her eyes at the villain's speech. It was pretty familiar to her, sadly. You all die now, yadda yadda. The glass in her hand feels cold.... Wait. Poison...? Oh no. The glass falls from her hand, shattering on the floor. Her chest hurt. "Always happens to me, doesn't it?" she grumbles. "You better beat that god up, fast..." She coughs. "I'm gonna stay here..." She takes a breath, and clutches the statue in her hands so hard her fingers ache. She's worn the mask before, remembers how it felt - hopefully it's enough to call it to her.
Zach looks like something out of Castlevania now, thanks to his cross lamps idea, but the rest of the whole introduction puts him off. Not teleporters, eh! "Hmm. Well." He would've done something really impressive, but Jack comes to him before then and he has to smirk a little bit. That's not so bad. "All right." He has one flute of champagne in one hand, one he's given by Jack, so surely between the two there's some poison that he could get an antidote from the hospital with. The others can take care of this...it's just a lich, and anyway he hates zombies especially. "Nftt," the magician intones, and he vanishes in a shower of purplish sparkles. Take that, mister 'none of you are teleporters'!
"What is this the second coming?" Bruce can be heard asking as crosses appear illuminating around. If any light on him is visible he can be seen rubbing at his pants with a handkerchief trying to dry off the wet spot. Now there is a voice that draws his attention and listening he sighs deeply. Hearing that people have been poisoned his eyes widen recalling he gave Lois a drink, "Really? Can this night get any better?" he questions with a growl his anxiety starting to rise a little. Hearing the smash of the glass he reaches a hand out to pat Lois gently on the back and shoulders. "I got to get her to the hospital. This isn't like a snake bite. I can't suck the poison out of her." he then reaches for the statue, "Here let me do it."
Glowing crosses are a momentary distraction for Axiom but the moment he sees his target, he's on the move. He starts out just walking, dodging and ducking around people as he heads for that masked lich. He wanted to do this quietly and without risk bit since the enemy has taken ths stage, he's moving on to plan B. As much as he doesn't like big flash things or the idea of a fight with so many people in the area, he knows how one aspect of his powers works and the people can be an advantage. Once he's close enough, Axiom darts forward. The illusion charm is cast aside in a dramatic fashion he'll be embarrassed by later but it serves its purpose. There's a flash of light as the illusion breaks, taking the black coloring from his costume as well. He's already starting to glow with faith power, walking faster as he seeks to get the Lich's attention. His power's good for hurting evil, undead things. "Or how about we stop you, save the people, and put you back where you belong. That sounds like a better plan to me," he speaks up loudly.
The lich spots something he doesn't like but hasn't give up yet.
There are actually MULTIPLE things he doesn't like and everyone present including Kilroy has a Rai stone sent in them, a single ton object trying to crush them....Yes, all at once.
Kilroy, distracted by the mice is helpless, though fortunately for him Veolus throws up a reactive Rai stone of his own, canceling it. He tries to stop the others but only kind of deflects them. Veolus is not ...as smart as Kilroy.
The lich can't really use his other magics effectively here though he does make some of the crowd get in the way of Axiom as he charges quite effectively, but Axiom's mere PRESENCE bypasses the prismatic sphere and causes his robes to flame slightly....the flames are doused with unholy water created by magic, but its still a distraction. He begins to chant...
Zach and Axiom would both recognize the simple spell of transfer, its a powerful brutal spell and it will mean taking the power from Loki permanently. It will take about five minutes to complete and apparently he lied about Midnight.
"Shield Lois!" That's aimed at Bruce. And yes, he knows exactly what Bruce will have to do to protect the woman. He did ask Kilroy if he particularly cared about this place. Giving the warning slows Jack's dodge, the stone hits him pretty hard, knocking the citywalker to the ground, although based off of what's been seen of his strength, he won't be down for long. He's got other plans, though. The stones, not part of the city. The house? Part of the city. The floor under the lich's feet...ripples, like waves across the ocean. NOT conducive to concentrating on magic, that.
The dog was kind of..stunned from being kicked around on the floor so much, but it blinks, wakes up and barks. In a red flesh it runs through the prismatic sphere like it wasn't even THERE, grabs the mask right off of Ascot's face and PULLS it off with its teeth, then it rushes back and plants it right on Lois's face.
The mask...is not meant to be pulled off this way....combined with the roiling of the earth beneath his feet and Ascot is PISSED!
The ritual is ruined....
"What was that phrase you used to use Kilroy....in your dnd game? Oh yeah....Rocks fall....EVERYONE DIES!"
He reaches his hand heavenward....
Moon Knight takes over completely as the new stone appears overhead, crashing down onto the four already pinning him in. It's a pretty claustrophobic situation, but Moon Knight doesn't hesitate. He crouches down to see in the dim light through the hole in the middle of one of the stones, pulling his truncheon out of his jacket. He fires the grapple right at the lich, imbuing it with as much energy from Loki as he is able to. He stands then, bracing a foot on the stone to yank hard if it catches the Lich, adding another degree of distraction to Jack's as the lich starts to cast something that sounds very bad indeed.
As soon as the mask is on her face, Lois feels the rush of energy, just as she did before. But there's no urging to steal Thor's underpants this time. "Good dog." she pats the statue/creature affectionately. "Guess who just got a mask?" Of course, there's that stone coin dropping on her. That's a problem. Instinct takes over. She knew what she wanted - a chance to be the hero for once. The mask's energy swirls, deflecting the stone coins from her and Bruce, who's still near her. "Hey Ascot? I'm attacking the darkness!" She *pushes* with magic, and a surge ripples, launching the coins at Ascot. Of course, it's not a precise throw...
It may not be a precise throw, but then there's Zachary Zatara to help it out. "Senots hsurc ym eof!!" He adds to the energy and intent of Lois, to ideally direct the strange and dangerous stones back at the sinister villain. Maybe he's helped a little with that, though with the mask he's fairly sure the plucky reporter will have enough to at least direct the ones nearest to her. He has the hospital working on an antidote though! So that's definitely a heroic measure. Maybe he'll get a nice write-up.
A deep growl begins to emit when Lois seems to be transformed by the mask. Even though she knocks the coins away Bruce can no longer tame the beast inside of him. With a loud raging roar he transforms into Hulk punching another coin as it comes towards them causing it to break before catching another twirling it around to throw it at the glowing sphere. Fear the Hulk! Feeling a cane whacking him in glances at one of the old ladies from earlier taking the cane he cracks it in half but before he can do much else a coin comes towards them and he saves the old woman by knocking it away.
Axiom smiles as the mask goes flying. But then Ascot is calling out internet things and Axiom tenses. Eyes scan the room quickly and a plan comes together in his mind. "Zatara! Head's up!" he calls out as a warning. The blue glow around Axiom flares brighter as he applies a boost to the magic user. Even as he increases Zatara's power, Axiom's copying it. Another flash of light emits from Axiom and his costume can be seen becoming a blue and white version of Zach's suit. His eyes settle on Kilroy and his spectral pests and he calls out a spell loudly. "Tsohg ecim kcab ot rieht gnitser secalp!" he's trying to banish the squeaky, chittering spirits.
And just like that POOF POOF POOF POOF the spirits of the red (not exactly ghosts but the magic doesn't care) are gone....Kilroy IMMEDIATELY starts creating counter Rai stones to stop some and destroys many others, but his father has stolen power and is boosted, so the amount dropping continues....but its been significantly slowed.
And then the tide is turned by not one, but TWO streams of rocks at his face.
Now, for those who don't know, Prismatic Sphere is a pretty nasty spell and rocks wouldn't work to good against it....except...WELL, when you're trying to steal Loki's POWER then power has to be let through, just like the power from the rocks right ot the face.
Now, as an undead, he's pretty touch but not tough enough to keep the spell up one he's hit in the face with twelve ton of rock.
But he has many contingencies and another sphere is just about to come up with Zach's spell slams through.
Continengices and stone skin...ruined...
No problem....He is about to unleash the Frost of the Underworld on them, a little gift from Hades, when Moon Knight slams through the rocks (though...hehas to climb a bit) and grapples Ascot in a death grip, chocking him solidly...Ascot begins to shimmer and ripple...And then he crumbles, out. But too drained even to phase into the floor.
The old woman looks at him and says to the Hulk, "Thank you young man, you're much nicer than that lout who spilled his drink on me." Glasses. McGoo level.
"Oh, good. I didn't have to drop the roof on him. Now, let's get Loki his power back and the people who need it the antidote?" Of course, slight problem. That tux isn't in great condition any more. And it's a rental...Jack's going to be in a certain amount of trouble. He turns toward Axiom. "Good timing." Oddly, he's not remotely surprised the other hero showed up. Well, he did say somebody was breaking in.
Moon Knight chokes Ascot with the grapple beam and all the divine energy he can muster until the lich crumbles to dust on the floor. He gives a sigh, scanning the room.. but even with the stones all over and Axiom appearing in a bright imitation of Zach, he ends up focused soundly on Lois.. She has the mask, and it's overwhelmingly his priority right now. Especially when it's next to the Hulk, who broke it before, and could possibly break it worse if he tried. "Zatara," he calls, gesturing to Lois. "We need to finish what we began before." no quips or breath catching.. he makes his way over to Lois, standing between her and the Hulk....just in case.
Well that was entertaining, certainly. The bemasked Lois looks, and feels, pretty confident. She still has a hold of the red dog statue, for some reason. "Now that's that, um... now what? The mask's power is keeping the poison from hurting me, but we need to be fast." She shakes her head, trying to think straight with the surge of energy through her. "Guys... I'm having trouble staying sane here." She takes a breath, then another. "Please hurry."
"It's all right." Zach has taken the time to move to Lois's side, but he's still attentive enough to his surroundings to make sure he's not going to be taken by surprise by some new, unlikely threat. "We're going to need to get to the hospital, but we should still have enough time. By the time we get there, they'll have enough antidote to administer to everyone, just in case." Which is far more than Zach could've just carried back by himself, especially since he rightly guessed there was a threat pressing.
A large hand reaches out patting the old woman on the head. Hulk turns back towards Lois as Moon steps in front of him. "HULK SMASH MASK! MOVE!" he grabs Moon by the throat lifting him upwards while roaring in his face.
Marc is murmuring quietly, "After we take care of the poison; people's lives are at stake, and there's some time.." he doesn't add aloud that he's still nervous about what will happen when they lose their connection with Loki.. and of the gods he detected when he arrived, one of them was blatantly familiar; Khonshu. He has no idea what would bring Khonshu to earth, but this isn't the sort of situation he's in a hurry to find out in.. though then he's being held up by the neck by the Hulk?! Moon Knight is darkly satisfied, if anything; the Hulk is planning just what he feared and he managed to get in the way of it. Now if only he could -talk- to explain.. breathing would be nice too.
Bit by bit, the house slowly responds as Jack systematically removes any traps. He can't get ALL of them, since some are too weird even for his senses, but he does get a LOT if not almost all of them.
Meanwhile, the police show up, and much to everyone's surprise, Ascot does NOT manage to get back to Hades and is taken to the Raft. It appears Cold Hard Cash has reached Super Villain Status.
Lois Lane turns to Hulk; she couldn't miss that yelling. She grips her head. "Hulk, I'm.. okay. Let him go." It was so hard for her to concentrate. "We have to... help Loki, right?" She shakes her head, "I can't get the mask off. I could before, but now I think it's stuck."
"It's all right. We'll handle it, as he says, *after* we get everyone antidoted. Or whatever y--" Zach's brow flattens immediately as he hears the backwards-speak. His eyes narrow a bit. "What..." But these questions will have to wait until later for their answers. Now is hospital time.
The grip isn't all that tight other than just holding him by the neck. Hulk can hear Lois trying to calm him but he tosses Moon away towards some of the tables. He could try ripping the mask off or breaking it but instead he attempts to pick Lois up over his shoulder and run towards the exit. "Lois need help. Hulk get Lois doctor." he says.
Axiom frowns as he walks towards Lois. "I can help," he says, flashing a quick sheepish smile Zach's way. He reaches into his pocket to take something out. But then Hulk is throwing Moon Knight and running away with Lois and Axiom squeaks as his plan fails. Still a Moon Knight to worry about though. "ElbaT ot gabria!"
The lives of the socialites were saved. Reputation on the party was mixed. Horrific, but interesting. Many would return if another thing was had....But only if Kilroy through it.
No one wanted a Dead Man's Party.
